Implementing sustainable mobility

A network of low cost wireless sensors and webcams to be installed in strategic locations, for e.g. fixed at traffic lights, but also specific apps on smart phones. These will be used to gather smart metering / sensing data to improve the planning, monitoring and control of mobility services. Gathered data can be related to urban accessibility, traffic and environmental indicators, and users’ satisfaction. It will make use of smart, low cost solutions, based on wireless networks. At the end we aim at installing around 50 mobility sensors in the city of Funchal looking at both locals and tourists. The mobility sensors will be installed in buses (for passenger counting research using new technologies) and in key locations in Funchal (as defined by CMF).

Objectives

  • Provide support to the development of Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) taking into account the needs of both tourists and residents.
  • Improve planning and services for mobility in cities (Funchal for this measure), considering both residents and tourists, using innovative passengers counting schemes and mobility sensors
  • Achieve a high sense of usefulness among decision makers with regard to the deployment of sensors.      

How will this be achieved?

This measure will address the following areas:

  • Innovative passengers counting’s schemes for the PT operator: The final goal will be to match demand/offer, especially in highly touristic routes which are often more crowded. Ultimately, contributions to fine-tune the current ticketing system and decrease fraud at the local public transport service might occur and can be foreseen as an outcome of the measure. The working group should also develop an operational planning tool which will be embedded by the information provided by the sensors.
  • Implement a set of smart sensors in sensible tourist areas able to screen  mobility trends and environmental data;
  • From collected data, reporting on mobility problems and check quality of life standards (e.g. air pollution levels);
  • Make available the database of collected data/information to city mobility planners involved in  the extended SUMP models.

How did the measure progress?

A paper and a demonstration were presented in the 5th IFIP Conference on Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability, December 6-7, 2017, describing the passive Wi-Fi tracking platform together with the plug-in sensors for environmental monitoring and the case studies that can be developed with our platform.

ARDITI and HF have been fine tuning the prototype for passenger counting sensors (installed in 20 buses). Passenger counting in buses using wifi detectors requires a long period of data collection so tests have no yet been concluded;

The prototype of the Environmental station was designed, developed and built. It is now being tuned for the sensor readings and a suitable protection box/container is being developed together with CMF;

Equipment related to the 2 prototypes was purchased (e.g. server, as it was using one from the Beanstalk project and antennas, as the project was relying on mobile data pens which are more expensive on the long run);

ARDITI worked with CMF in order to find the most suitable solution for counting vehicles and pedestrians. After analysing existing market solutions, they decided to install a pilot test using Magenta´s TrafficFlow (contribution from MEMEX);

The first version of the database and back-office platform for both the "environmental station" and the "passenger counting" collected data is running and available online for project partners to see.

What were the outcomes of the measure?

A network of 50 smart sensors located in tourist areas in Funchal (rather than the 20 sensors initially planned);

A report on mobility issues (including proposals for inputs on the extended SUMP model), based on the study of the database of collected information.

Use of collected data for obtaining statistics, mobility patterns and trends that can contribute to improve / plan / manage mobility in general in the city and in particular for PT.
